What We’re Using This Week on the Top Floor (Free Math Countdown 🎉)

Since it’s a new year, we’re starting something new. Each week, we’ll share what we’re actually using in our own classrooms so you can plan right along with us on the Top Floor.

Many of you have already been back for a bit. We had three weeks off for winter break (yes, we know 😅), so this is our first week back, and here’s what we’re using.

And yes... there’s a freebie at the end.

1. New Year Decimals Countdown (Free for Subscribers!)
We’re kicking things off with a 10-page decimals challenge that students complete in reverse order—counting down from 10 to 1 as a fun New Year tie-in.

How it works:

  • Students complete one page at a time
  • Each page gets checked before they move on
  • When they finish all 10, they earn a small prize

The prize doesn’t need to cost money. We usually do a water bottle sticker or bonus Class Dojo points. Simple. Motivating. Effective.

We’re sharing this entire decimals packet free with our email subscribers because it’s such an easy win during the first week back.

2. Starting Fractions with “The Giant One”
In math, we’re beginning our fractions unit, and we always start with Finding Equivalent Fractions Using the Giant One. Students use fractions equivalent to 1 and physically outline them with a giant number one to show that the value isn't changing. It builds a strong visual foundation and helps equivalent fractions click before moving into harder concepts. 3. How We’re Using Instructron This Week
We’re keeping things simple with Instructron and focusing on two tools:

  • Group Maker to help us create a new seating chart (check out the features below!)
  • Practice Tests as independent seatwork during reading group time

One of the practice tests we’re using is a Martin Luther King Jr. practice test, and it’s now available directly in the Instructron test library. If you’re an Instructron user, you can click the link and start using this same practice right away—no setup needed. If not, use code TOPFLOOR20 to get 20% off any plan! Also, new feature alert...you can now PRINT any test from our library! This will be awesome if you need a break from the screens!

4. Kicking Off Our MLK Writing Project
We’re also beginning to introduce our Martin Luther King Jr. writing project, where students write their own “I Have a Dream” speech paired with a meaningful craftivity. It’s always one of our favorite projects to do in January. If you made it this far, here’s your freebie 🎁
As a thank-you for being part of our email list, we’re sharing our New Year Decimals Countdown packet completely free.

Hi teachers, It is officially the last week before spring break… and the energy is telling us everything we need to know. The weather has been all over the place here in Southern California, routines are feeling a little looser, and let’s just say the social dynamics in a 5th grade classroom are thriving right now. It’s that time of year. Spring break is well-earned. Even so, we’ve got a really meaningful (and engaging) week ahead: 💜 Women’s History Month + Symbolism We’re wrapping up our...

Hi everyone, It happened again... dance-parenting is taking over our lives! We missed last week's email because we were both at a dance competition just minutes away from Disneyland. Unfortunately, we were surrounded by rhinestones, hairspray, and loud music rather than Mickey, the scent of churros, and Pirates of the Caribbean. But hey… it’s all for the kids, right? Here’s what’s happening in our planbook this week on the Top Floor. Wrapping Up the American Revolution We are finishing up our...

Hey friends, First, a quick apology for missing last weekend’s email. We were fully immersed in dance parent life and, if you know… you know. Sometimes it feels like we are juggling teaching, creating, and parenting all at once. Last weekend, dance won. Now, back to our planbook! Women's History Month! March means Women’s History Month, and we keep this one intentionally low prep. This doesn’t have to be a big, time-consuming unit to make an impact. We just share one or two biographies a day...
